Session: Workshop

24/10/2013

Create Platforms, not Products.

The workshop will guide the participants through a process and a tool (The Platform Design Canvas) that can be used to look at products - and enterprises in general - as platforms for value creation.

The workshop will guide the participants through a process and a tool (The Platform Design Canvas) that can be used to look at products - and enterprises in general - as platforms for value creation. The idea is to switch from the linear business perspective - where business mission consists in creating products and services out of supplies and sell it to the *customers*,  maximizing revenues – to a new perspective where peers create value and exchange it between them, inside the ecosystem, thanks to the enabling power of the platform. The mission of the platform stakeholders is to identify existing transactions, and value paths then build channels to facilitate these exchanges. The more value the platform stakeholders will be able to inject into the ecosystem the more value they will be able to extract, fairly. These platform-products will be more resilient and meaningful thanks to the fact that they are inspired by existing communities and modeled after the value exchanges and value creation that happen inside the community participating to the ecosystem. By creating opportunities and providing channels, the platform owners will create strong bonds with the peers community and will be able to resist long term disruption thanks to a more resilient business perspective, on which the community, at the end of the day, relies. Who is it for: all those dealing or interested in the product design, platforms, ecosystems, marketplaces, brand / design business (strategy), organization / process design, social innovation.
